Major risk factors for atherosclerosis

Dyslipidemia: is the most important risk factor for atherosclerosis. Low density lipoprotein (LDL) and lipoprotein (a) [LP(a)] are known to cause atherosclerosis.

Hypertension: It is an important risk factor for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Diabetes: The onset of atherosclerosis is earlier and more severe in patients with diabetes than in those without diabetes.

Genetic factors: Atherosclerosis has a familial tendency to cluster.
